During the council sitting in the council hall at the district headquarters in Luwero Town Council, the councilors from Kalagala, Makulubita and Butuntumula among other Sub Counties and Town Councils have reported increasing cases of insecurity.
Luwero district councilors have called for a special session to strictly discuss at length, insecurity which is reported across the district.
The date for the session will be indicated in a period not exceeding a fortnight when the participants will be invited. During the council sitting in the council hall at the district headquarters in Luwero Town Council this week, the councilors from Kalagala, Makulubita and Butuntumula among other Sub Counties and Town Councils have reported increasing cases of insecurity.
For instance Rita Nalweyiso, the female councilor for Butuntumula reported cases of rape and defilement. In the same session chaired by District Speaker Abdul Mazinga, Nalweyiso’s counterparts from Kalagala and Makulubita Sub Counties reported theft and burglary.
They also said that increasing cattle thefts had fueled mob justice on the suspects, with five men lynched in the last one-month period in Makulubita Sub County.
It was against this background that Erasts Kibirango, the Luwero district LC V chairperson called for a special session, a call they have all agreed upon, with the full district security committee and other leaders in attendance.
Kibirango reasoned that the matter was that serious thus the need to find a lasting solution for for the safety of the populace. Luganda Audio
In attendance of the session in which the council moved to schedule a special sitting over insecurity, was the Savannah region Community Liaison Officer (CLO) Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Patrick Lule, also doubling as the Acting Savannah region police publicist.
In reaction, while holding an interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN) Lule said that as police, they do welcome the meeting. According to ASP Lule, they are only waiting for a formal invitation to attend and listen to the concerned leaders.
CLO Lule also reacted to the concerns that some of the force’s officers are conniving with criminals, saying they plan to launch special investigations. Luganda Audio
Late last month (September), police in Luwero district arrested at least 36 people in an operation that was aimed at curbing the increasing criminality in Luwero town.
The arrest followed the force’s records that indicated scores of cases of burglary, mugging and attempted rape in previous weeks. The suspects were charged with theft, possession of drugs, burglary, and vagrancy.
According to the 2021 Annual Crime Report, Luwero district was ranked fifth among districts with the highest number of theft cases after registering 723 cases. URN
