Kampala woman MP Shamim Malende was this afternoon arrested and held in police custody for hours before she was released without any charges later in the evening.
She was distributing reflector jackets to Boda Boda riders around the areas of Kampala before the Kawempe police intercepted and took her to the Police Post.
“Earlier today in parts of kampala while distributing reflector jackets to boda riders, I was intercepted by police and taken to Kawempe police for questioning.
Thank you all for putting pressure, I have been set free without any charge being preferred,” Ms Malende told New 24/7.
Mr Patrick Onyango the spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan Police said, “We found the honorable with her people in the middle of the road and we directed her to our offices but we did not arrest her. We ask all leaders who want to help their people to go through the authorities.”
Malende says she was responding to the huge uproar that has been caused by the recent operation that has been carried out around Kampala on Boda riders who don’t have reflector jackets, riding permits as one of the requirements for them to be on road.
This operation kicked off on Monday and more than 5000 bikes have been impounded at CPS during the ongoing operation by police to enforce traffic law.
