Justice Ruddy Opio Aweri passed on today from Mulago hospital, the Chief Justice Alfonse Dolo wrote this morning.
“The judiciary family is saddened with the passing of Justice Opio Aweri, as he has been described by many as a great towering legal mind who served the bench with bundles dedication, utmost humility and commitment for nearly four decades. No doubt that the nation at large will miss his noble service,” Justice Owinyi-Dolo said in a statement.
Rubby is a Ugandan Lawyer and Judge who has served as justice of the Supreme Court of Uganda since September 2015. Two years later was named the new chief inspector of courts for three years.
The 69-year-old attained a bachelor’s degree in law and a master’s at Makerere University. And a diploma in legal practice from the Law development center.
His career started in 1982, as a legal assistant in Soroti district. In 1983, Opio Aweri was appointed a Grade One magistrate. He gradually rose through the ranks and in 1998, was appointed a judge of the High Court. In 2014, he was promoted to the Uganda Court of Appeal.
3 days ago the judge was rushed to Mulago Hospital due to a sudden illness in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Today, 4th of December the judge breathed his last in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Mulago Hospital
Rubby was born in Dokolo district to the late Late Sameiri Opio Aweri in 1953.
