National Unity Platform (NUP) lead lawyer Anthony Wameli has died, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has announced.
“Very sad day! Just learnt of the untimely passing of our dear brother and Head of our Legal Team, comrade Wameli Anthony from the U.S. where he’s been admitted for treatment. Details will be provided in due course. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Bobi Wine said in a tweet.
The government critic and human rights lawyer left the country in 2021 for specialised treated for a condition that was described at the time as intestinal cancer.
The lawyer had just led the team that petitioned the supreme court challenging the election results in which President Museveni was declared winner with 51% while Bobi Wine came second with 38%.
Last year Wameli named as the best criminal defence lawyer of the year by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) and his law firm, Wameli & Co Advocates was also selected as the best law firm of the year.
Mr David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP secretary general said, “Very sad to learn of the untimely death of our brother, comrade Wameli Anthony in the U.S.! You have fought the good fight. You have finished the race. You have kept the faith. May the angels of God receive you in eternal glory.”
