The Acting LOP and Buhweju County MP, Hon. Mwijukye Francis has expressed concern over the lack of funds to finance critical programs in the education sub-programme.
Mwijukye says that providing Shs5bn for the student loan scheme instead of the required Shs27bn means that students who are already on the scheme are going to be discontinued.
“There are many budget cuts in the ministry of education and sports. We were told of securing our future. How is the future going to be secured? How are we going to progress steadily when there is no money in the Ministry of Education and Sports,” asked Hon. Mwijukye.
The discussion as Parliament debated Committee Report on Ministerial Policy Statement for Ministry of Education and Sports.
The House in a plenary session this afternoon debated on the committee report on ministerial policy statement for ministry of education and sports.
The Committee noted that government will not grant aid to any new school in financial year 2023/24 despite receiving 620 requests across the country for takeover by the government of community and NGO schools as government-aided primary schools.
The Committee further notes that in FY 2022/23, 6.08bn had been appropriated for grant aiding of 28 primary schools and Shs16.88bn for 37 secondary schools but these funds were not released.
On the Rehabilitation of Traditional secondary schools, the Committee on Education and Sports recommends that Shs5bn be appropriated each financial year towards the rehabilitation of these old traditional secondary schools in order to ensure the delivery of quality education services countrywide.
