National Resistance Movement-NRM party supporters in Tororo County have boycotted the party voters register clean up exercise that kicked off yesterday.
The development was confirmed by the NRM communications director Mr. Emmanuel Dombo who is also the activity supervisor for Bukedi and Bugisu regions.
While addressing the media this morning, he said unlike other areas in the two regions, the party supporters for Tororo North and South Counties declined to participate in the party activity after their leaders reportedly demobilized them protesting sucking of the registrar for the Tororo county NRM party mobilization office branch.
He disclosed that the party’s electoral commission sucked the former party registrar Joseph Joe Oburu after discovering that he is also a civil servant which breaches the party constitution.
Mr. Dombo said the exercise was suspended after a failure of agreement between the party secretariat and the party leaders of the two counties.
‘’As a supervisor, I have written to the party secretariat seeking advice on what to do but already the party vice national chairperson has sought to have an audience with leaders from Tororo county to help come up with an amicable solution’’ he said.
He said once a solution is sought, the party will consider organizing for the same activity to ensure that valid registers are available in every village in preparation for any other party activity.
He encouraged party members to make it a point that they participate in the exercise to make them eligible to participate in any party activities.
However a cross section of villages in the district registered low turn up as the ruling National Resistance Movement party kicked off with the voter registration and update exercise.
The exercise is meant to update the NRM party voters register including deleting those who have died, migrated and bring on board those willing to join the party.
Like in Aturukuku village Bison “A” Maguria parish Western division Tororo Municipality, the village registrar Muson Godfrey says the first day has always a challenge of low turn up but subsequently the exercise will catch up.
“I have tasked members of the village party executives to go and mobilize their supporters and I hope tomorrow the number will be mob” he said.
The district NRM party chairperson who is also the Tororo Municipality Member of Parliament Mr. Yeri Apollo Ofwono said he is optimistic that all the members will be served within five days.
He said he is happy that across the district each electoral area received enough materials with each having a trained village registrar.
He challenged the registrars to ensure that they handle the exercise with a slot of integrity and don’t allow themselves to be influenced by anyone.
“We have told the registrars across the district not to deny any one registration but if course work closely with the village NRM chairpersons to identify their residents because they know each one of them but also we shall mobilize them over our local radio FM’s” he said.
