“In light of this NEC (National Executive Committee) has resolved to recall Hon.Mathias Mpuuga from the parliamentary Commission on account of corruption, dishonesty, and abuse of office and to notify parliament of the same,” in part read a statement issued by National Unity Platform (NUP) this afternoon as they appointed Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake to a position he lost in an impeachment two years ago before the it was taken to court and then court of appeal.
Zaake has been named as the parliamentary commissioner replacing Mpuuga MP, the former Leader of Opposition who has occupied the position for hardly two months after his appointment been recalled from this role because of engaging himself in the alleged acts of corruption and abuse of office.
National Unity Platform Electoral Commission has concluded on nominating Zaake because of the manner in which he was removed from this role in March 2022 which is said to have been illegal.
“NEC further resolved to nominate Hon Zaake Francis Butebi as parliamentary commissioner ,his nomination was informed by the fact that he was illegally removed from from that role in March 2022 in order to pave way for the grand corrupt and questionable dealings of the parliamentary commission that have now come to light,”in a statement issued by NUP signed by Dr.Lina Zedriga Waru.
In March 2022, Mr Zaake was impeached by parliament following a vote on motion that was moved to have him out on the grounds of misconduct. In a secret ballot conducted out of the 161 member of parliament,155 members voted to remove him from the the parliament commission while only four members voted against the proposal. He then petitioned the constitutional court which stayed him in the position but parliament appealed the matter.
Last month Hon Mpuuga’s fights started when an online exhibition dubbed Ugandaparliamentexhibition pinned him for having engaged himself in acts of corruption and abuse of office of the Leader of the opposition when he together with the NRM parliamentary commissioners allocated themselves 1.7Billion shillings as service reward in 2022.
NUP leadership came out and requested Mr Mpuuga to either step down as commissioner or provide satisfactory explanation for engaging in such actions that go against the party morals and values which Mpuuga declined.
“Although he responded to NEC’s request to show cause why he should not be recalled from the parliamentary commissioner,he did not provide any satisfactory explanation for engaging in this grave action that goes against the mission,v alues, and objectives of the party,” Dr Zendiriga Waru Abuku, the deputy president in charge of the North wrote in a statement.
She also added that,”In light of this NEC has resolved to recall Mathias from the parliamentary Commission on account of corruption, dishonesty, and abuse of office and to notify parliament of the same”.
If Mpuuga is removed from the post of the commissioner ,he will be the shortest serving commissioner in the history of Uganda.
