The 73rd Makerere University Graduation started on Monday with over 13,000 students set to graduate. The consecutive event will have the institution release 6,809 (52%) females, and 6,412 (48%) males.
The ceremony was graced by Minister of Education Janet Museveni alongside the Vice Chancellor of the University of London, Prof Wendy Thomson who delivered a commencement lecture.
The graduation started with the students from the College of Natural Sciences, the College of Health Sciences, and the School of Law.
At least 13,221 graduands, of whom 6,809 (52%) are female and 6,412 (48%) are male, are expected to graduate during this 73rd Graduation of the this great institution of Learning.
Further more, 102 will graduate with Ph.Ds while 1,378 are master’s graduates, 108 are postgraduate diploma holders and 35 are undergraduate diploma.
For security purposes the university management issued a directive on Sunday before the Graduation in which the chairperson of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Patrick Mangeni, issued guidelines for graduation.
In his statement, Mangeni said that no phones, cameras, and video cameras will be allowed at Freedom Square throughout the five-day graduation ceremony.
Other things included dangerous weapons, chemicals, alcohol, cigarettes, canned foods and drinks, bottled drinks in back bags, lighters, glasses, and knives among others
Students Graduating are from college of Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, School of Law, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, College of Education and External Studies, Business and Management Sciences and College of Computing and Information Sciences. Others are Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security, Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences and Makerere University Business School.
It should be noted that this is the second physical graduation ceremony the university is holding after Covid-19 unlike other the 72nd Graduation that was virtual.
