The police have said that they have arrested the driver who wanted to run over a traffic officer and preferred charges of violating traffic lights, reckless driving and attempted murder as the public criticizes both driver and traffic officer in equal measure.
In a statement released by the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said that a one Mukwaya Isaac driving car registration number UAZ 515C made a deliberate attempt to run over a traffic officer on Kampala Road being held at CPS as his files waits to be sanctioned to appear in court.
“The driver, identified as Mukwaya Isaac, attempted to deceive the authorities by pretending to be sick when brought in for interrogation. However, upon examination, it was determined that he was in normal health and had intentionally inserted the cannula into his hand,” statement reads in part.
In an incident captured in a video circulating on social media on Tuesday showed a one Josam Katongole a traffic officer attempting to stop a roaming vehicle, but instead of complying with the directives, the driver chose to endanger the life of the police officer.
However, in one of the posts that went viral on Twitter netzines didn’t fail to question how a professional officer could risk their life all in the name of capturing a traffic offender or as to whether it was quite normal for the entire department’s code of conduct while handling traffic violations on the road
“Yes he must be arrested but I don’t know if you also train your officers to stop vehicles while they are in the middle of the road? Sometimes in round about. Let me tell you I can never stop were am not supposed to stop coz I don’t like it to cause traffic to my fellow road users. You should also train your officers to be professional. Thank you @PoliceUg,” a one @WasajjaAiden tweeted.
Adding Should @mkainerugaba first visit @PoliceUg and teach this traffic department how to handle road users like it’s done in other countries? Why do you stop a car in the middle of the road? The last visit he made at KCCA, SFC is now in charge of fixing these potholes.
Earlier on the traffic police department introduced an online system where motor vehicles involved in any traffic violation are issued with a ticket that help in tracing Butalso punish those found guilty of the offense committed.
The reason for such an interaction thus for remains unclear especially that the offender could’ve been easily captured by the public cameras.
